Designers Delight - Design Books to live by

The Library has been busy updating it's collection of Interior Design Books.

Here are a few new arrivals.

Design for sustainability : a sourcebook of integrated, eco-logical solutions by
Janis Birkeland.
363.7 BIR

With radical and innovative design solutions, everyone could be living in buildings and settlements that are more like gardens than cargo containers, and that purify air and water, generate energy, treat sewage and produce food - at lower cost. Birkeland introduces systems design thinking that cuts across academic and professional boundaries and the divide between social and physical sciences to move towards a transdiciplinary approach to environmental and social problem-solving. This sourcebook is useful for teaching, as each topic within the field of environmental management and social change has pairs of short readings providing diverse perspectives to compare, contrast and debate. Design for Sustainability presents examples of integrated systems design based on ecological principles and concepts and drawn from the foremost designers in the fields of industrial design, materials, housing design, urban planning and transport, landscape and permaculture, and energy and resource management.

Who is designing the classics of tomorrow? Designers on Design answers these questions and discusses the elements that set great designers apart. A beautifully illustrated guide to today's cutting-edge furniture and product designers, it features interviews with each of the designers asking questions such as, "What product do you wish you had designed?", "What was your big break?", "What influences your work?" and "What's the greatest challenge you face in your work?". A potted biography introduces each designer and beautiful photographs illustrate not only the designer's own work, but also the influences that inspire them and sketches or their ideas in progress. The book places each designer in historical context and an illustrated time-line running from the 1920s to the present day - and even looking into the future - forms part of the introduction and shows that the modernism of 100 years ago is still influential today.

In fact, without knowing it, most of us have probably already come across Kühlhorn s designs. Scandinavia is firmly established as a hub for outstanding interior design, fashion, and décor. In this practical handbook, Lotta Kühlhorn offers expert advice to those designing patterns with the help of numerous photographs and personal anecdotes. She explains how she works, what inspires her, and why edges are just as important as middles. With an impressive thoroughness, Kühlhorn shows readers how to use the most common techniques for creating patterns and explores colors, forms, and the best ways to combine them. From encompassing conceptual questions to intricate details, this book elucidates all of the facets involved in designing patterns that can be used for fields such as textile, paper, and product design.
