Sewing techniques are
sometimes overlooked in the design process but acquiring these skills can be
transformational. The ability to turn a two-dimensional design into its
three-dimensional realization comes from having mastered basic sewing
techniques. Sewing Techniques simplifies the often complex techniques that lie
behind this process by arming designers with the precise information and skills
needed to undertake each task. Designers who develop a basic understanding of
the processes involved in sample and garment construction often produce
successful outcomes based on a more experimental and creative approach applied
during the product development process. Developing a sample folio and being
able to refer to samples and develop them according to each individual design
project is a process that requires experimentation and creative thought
underpinned by a basic understanding of sewing techniques. This book explores
the essential equipment needed - from fabric types to diagrams identifying
component parts of a sewing machine, to machine operation. Throughout each
process, clear diagrams accompanied by explanatory description panels allow
readers to achieve the best possible results, including how to troubleshoot
problems that may be encountered before and during sewing. Each section
concludes with a project, progressing from easy to challenging. Fabrics for
each project give designers the opportunity to handle different fabric types
and understand the complexities of sourcing and selecting. Mastering the basic
principles covered in Sewing Techniques will enable both fashion students and
the contemporary craft-worker to develop their techniques with a view to
becoming creative practice-based professionals.
Drawing Fashion celebrates
a unique collection of some of the most remarkable fashion illustrations from
the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These original works define the fine
art of illustrating fashion, from the collections of Chanel, Dior, Comme des
Garcons and Poiret as well as Victor and Rolf, Lacroix and McQueen. This
catalogue, which accompanies the exhibition at the Design Museum in London,
showcases fashion illustrators at their creative heights: Lepape at the
beginning of the century, Gruau in the 40's and 50's, Antonio throughout the
60s, 70s and 80s, to current artists Mats Gustafson, Aurore de La Morinerie and
Francois Berthoud. The illustrations reflect not only the spirit and the style
of the decades but also the wider social and cultural changes of the century.
This book offers a
thorough grounding in the principles of fashion design, describing the
qualities and skills needed to become a fashion designer, examining the varied
career opportunities available and giving a balanced inside view of the fashion
business today. Subjects covered include how to interpret a project brief;
building a collection; choosing fabric; fit, cutting and making techniques;
portfolio presentation, and fashion marketing and economics. This third edition
has been totally redesigned and extensively updated, with new images showing
the latest fashion trends and coverage of new techniques.
The Origins of Italian
Fashion examines the history of Italian fashion from the beginning of the
twentieth century, when the Lombard tailor Rosa Genoni created the first
Italian fashion house independent from the prevailing French style, to World
War II, when the Fascist regime co-opted fashion as a propaganda tool.
Illustrated with archive material from the designers and the earliest Italian
fashion magazines, this book concentrates on the most important designers from
the early years of Italian fashion. From Gabriella di Robilant, the Italian
'inventor' of sportswear fashion, to Salvatore Ferragamo and his famous
orthopaedic shoes, to Elsa Schiaparelli, the first great protagonist of Italian
style, these designers' influence continues to be felt today.
This entertaining A to Z follows the success of
the popular V&A guides to Style and Hollywood Style. Compiled by Kate
Bethune, it brings together style tips, pithy advice and engaging opinions in a
beautiful book that will make a perfect present for anyone getting ready for a
wedding, or indeed recovering from one. Where fashion has always moved on
swiftly from season to season, bridal wear can keep a trend or style current
for several years or longer - maintaining perennial favourites and occasional
revivals. Concentrating on wedding style, but also featuring thoughts on
etiquette and history, this book captures some of the abiding wisdom and
witticisms that surround the Happy Day.
In more than 2,000 issues, British Vogue magazine has acted as a cultural
barometer, putting fashion in the context of the larger world in which we live
- how we dress, how we entertain, what we eat, listen to, watch, who leads us,
excites us and inspires us. The century's most talented photographers,
illustrators and artists have contributed to it. In Lee Miller it had,
unexpectedly, its own war photographer; in Norman Parkinson, Cecil Beaton,
David Bailey, Snowdon and Mario Testino the greatest portrait and fashion
photographers of their generation; and in Beaton and Irving Penn two giants of
twentieth-century photography. From 1892, American Vogue chronicled the life of
beautiful people - their clothes, parties, houses and habits - and the magazine
was exported for intrigued British readers. In 1916, when the First World War
made transatlantic shipments impossible, its proprietor, Conde Nast, authorised
a British edition. It was an immediate success, and over the following ten
decades of uninterrupted publication continued to mirror its times - the
austerity and optimism that followed two world wars, the 'Swinging London'
scene of the sixties, the radical seventies, the image-conscious eighties - and
in its second century remains at the cutting edge of photography and design.
Decade by decade, Vogue 100: A Century of Style celebrates the greatest moments
in fashion, beauty and portrait photography. Illustrated throughout with
well-known images, as well as the less familiar and recently rediscovered, the
book focuses on the faces that shaped the cultural landscape: from Matisse to
Bacon, Freud and Hirst, from Dietrich to Paltrow, from Fred Astaire to David
Beckham, from Lady Diana Cooper to Lady Diana Spencer. It features the fashion
designers who defined the century - Dior, Galliano, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent,
McQueen - and explores more broadly the changing form of the twentieth-century
woman.
Spanning four centuries, the V&A's Fashion
Collection is the most comprehensive in the world, housing unrivalled
collections of dress, accessories, shoes and hats from the seventeenth century
to the present day. This concise volume perfectly encapsulates the collection,
from rare eighteenth-century gowns and exquisite eighteenth-century bodices to
1930s evening wear, post-war couture and show-stopping ensembles by
contemporary designers. Fashion designers represented include Charles Frederick
Worth, Madeleine Vionnet, Cristobal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel, Christian Dior,
Mary Quant, Stephen Jones, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen.
The Ambassador Magazine : Promoting Post-War BritishTextiles And Fashion / Edited By Christopher Breward & Claire Wilcox.
The Ambassador has been described as 'probably
the most daring and enterprising trade magazine ever conceived'. With the motto
'Export or Die!', the magazine was renowned for its innovative design and
adventurous editorial approach in promoting British manufacturing in the
post-war period. This book takes a detailed look at the background and impact
of The Ambassador. The magazine was driven by the vision of its founder Hans
Juda and his wife, Elsbeth, who was responsible for much of the magazine's
striking photography. Focusing on the perceived strengths of British industry,
they set up ambitious photo shoots to showcase the latest couture fashions by
the likes of Charles Creed and Victor Stiebel. The magazine promoted fine art
as an inspiration for design, and commissioned artists such as John Piper and
Henry Moore for their covers.
At its very essence, textile art is about
mark-making. As an artist would use a pencil, an embroiderer or quilter can use
stitch to make marks on fabric - a fundamental creative act. The making of
marks often starts and underpins the entire design process, and a textile
artwork is usually made up of repeated stitched marks. This fascinating book
shows how marks can be used in textile work, both simple and complex, and
explores the crossover between stitch and drawing. Author Helen Parrott is well
known for her strongly graphic textile art, which uses marks to stunning visual
effect. The book is divided into the types of marks that can be made on fabric,
varying in complexity, arrangement and 'feel' - single, grouped, massed,
regular, irregular, calligraphic, permanent, transient, and so on. It covers
both hand and machine stitch, which make very different types of mark and between
them offer limitless potential for mark-making, used both separately and
together. It aims to help you take inspiration from the world around you to
create marks, develop your own mark-making skills and strengthen your personal
creative voice, and is an essential book for any textile artist.
