Brand new self service machine!

The Library has recently installed a shiny new self service machine - this means that the process of borrowing and returning books should be much quicker and easier.

All you need to do is touch your card to the reader on the front of the machine - and then place ALL the items you are taking out, onto the shelf.

It will then give you return dates, which you can either have as a printed slip, or and email notification - helping to use less paper and protect our environment.

Library staff will still be on hand to help out!

Let us know what you think!

Spooky New Titles.

The library has taken stock of several spooky new titles and put on a ghoulish display to celebrate Halloween! We have also acquired some new books on witchcraft and magic.

The art of horror : an illustrated history  /  edited by Stephen Jones ; foreword by Neil Gaiman.  (2015)

Amazingly, there has never been a book quite like The Art of Horror- a celebration of frightful images, compiled and presented by some of the genre's most respected names. While acknowledging the beginnings of horror-related art in legends and folk tales, the focus of the book is on how the genre has presented itself to the world since the creations of Bram Stoker and Mary Shelley first became part of the public consciousness in the 19th century. It's all here: from early engravings-via dust jackets, book illustrations, pulp magazines, movie posters, comic books, and paintings-to today's artists working entirely in the digital realm. Editor Stephen Jones and his stellar team of contributors have sourced visuals from archives and private collections (including their own) worldwide, ensuring an unprecedented selection that is accessible to those discovering the genre, while also including many images that will be rare and unfamiliar to even the most committed fan. From the shockingly lurid to the hauntingly beautiful-including images of vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, demons, serial killers, alien invaders, and more-every aspect of the genre is represented in ten themed chapters. Quotes from artists/illustrators, and a selection from writers and filmmakers, are featured throughout.

The Krampus and the old, dark Christmas : roots and rebirth of the folkloric devil  by  Al Ridenour.  (2016)

With the appearance of the demonic Christmas character Krampus in contemporary Hollywood movies, television shows, advertisements, and greeting cards, medieval folklore has now been revisited in American culture. Krampus-related events and parades occur both in North America and Europe, and they are an ever-growing phenomenon.
Though the Krampus figure has once again become iconic, not much can be found about its history and meaning, thus calling for a book like Al Ridenour's The Krampus: Roots and Rebirth of the Folkloric Devil. With Krampus's wild, graphic history, Feral House has hired the awarded designer Sean Tejaratchi to take on Ridenour's book about this ever-so-curious figure.
Al Ridenour has lectured on Krampus at the Goethe Institutes in Los Angeles. He became somewhat of an internet phenomenon himself due to the hilarious hijinks he coordinated with the controversial Cacophony Societies.

The Occult, Witchcraft & Magic  by  Christopher Dell.  (2016)

From the earliest Paleolithic cave rituals, magic has gripped the imagination. Magic and magicians appear in early Babylonian texts, the Bible, Judaism and Islam. Secret words, spells and incantations lie at the heart of every mythological tradition. Today, magic means many things: contemporary Wicca is practised widely as a modern pagan religion in Europe and the US; ‘magic’ also evokes the cathartic rituals of Chaos magic, but stretches to include the non-spiritual, rapid-fire sleight of hand performed by slick stage magicians who fill vast arenas.
The Occult, Witchcraft and Magic is packed with authoritative text and a huge and inspired selection of images, chosen from unusual and hidden sources. The material is presented in 100 entries, and includes some of the best-known representations of magic and the occult from around the world.

The Little Book of Witchcraft  by  Astrid Carvel.  (2017)

Are you in need of a little magic to entice love into your life?

Maybe someone you know could benefit from a good-luck spell?

Or perhaps you want to feel more in control of your destiny?

The Little Book of Witchcraft uncovers the mysteries of this ancient art and shows you how to tap into the positive natural energies of the cosmos to release your inner power. Learn about different kinds of witchcraft and its fascinating history, its symbolism and the building blocks of Wicca, and how to perform simple spells to attract good energy, luck, love, health and happiness.

The Stanley Kubrick archives
791.430233092 KUB
The Kubrick files from the archives of cinematic genius. In 1968, when Stanley Kubrick was asked to comment on the metaphysical significance of 2001: A Space Odyssey, he replied: It’s not a message I ever intended to convey in words. 2001 is a nonverbal experience...I tried to create a visual experience, one that bypasses verbalized pigeonholing and directly penetrates the subconscious with an emotional and philosophic content. Now available as part of our Bibliotheca Universalis series, The Stanley Kubrick Archives borrows from the director s philosophy. From the opening sequence of Killer’s Kiss to the final frames of Eyes Wide Shut, it allows the masterful visuals of Kubrick s complete films to impress through a sequence of compelling, mesmerizing stills. We uncover Kubrick s creative process through fascinating archival material, including set designs, sketches, correspondence, documents, screenplays, drafts, notes, and shooting schedules. Accompanying the visual material are essays by noted Kubrick scholars, articles written by and about Kubrick, and a selection of Kubrick s best interviews. The result is a visual, archival, and scholarly journey through masterworks of 20th century cinema and the meticulous mind of the director behind them.

Viral Marketing: The Science of Sharing is not your typical 'how to get shared' book. It would be nice to believe that viral success is as easy as being sneezed on. Those who spend a marketing dollar relish the possibility that the brave new world has brought brave new rules and the tantalising potential for a free ride. After applying scientific method and rigorous research to the topic, Nelson-Field says, "Wake up and smell the well-branded coffee". Using original research from more than 2 years of work, 5 different data sets, around 1000 videos, 9 individual studies and a large team of researchers from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science, Viral Marketing offers solid advice on the nebulous business of video sharing. Dr Nelson-Field reports new knowledge on sharing, memory and the influence of creative devices. Viral Marketing suggests that contrary to current trends, the old scientific laws of buyer behaviour and advertising still apply to social media. Marketers who have read How Brands Grow will find the key research that underpins this new work familiar. Nelson-Field's research builds on the science behind brands and buying. This is a must read book for anyone working in the social media space. Read it before you strap those roller skates onto a kitten, it might just save you some time, money and credibility. Watch Karen Nelson-Field talk about her research on how emotions drive video sharing.

This new edition covers the history of avante-garde film and video, ranging from Cezanne and dada, via Cocteau, Brakhage and Le Grice, to the new wave of British video artists in the 1990s. The author also reconstitutes the avante-garde film as an independent form of art practice with its own internal logic and aesthetic discourse

Creating the next YouTube blockbuster is easier than you think! Includes more than 100 QR Codes linking to successful viral videos! "These guys are the viral experts, and they show you the way in clear, concise language. This is the first recipe for virality that I buy." (Kent Nichols, co-creator of viral phenomenon AskANinja.com). One Saturday morning in 2006, Stephen Voltz and Fritz Grobe dropped 500 Mentos mints into 100 bottles of Coke in front of a video camera. Their video went viral in a matter of hours, and before they knew it, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, and NPR were calling. Since then, more than 100 million people have watched "The Extreme Diet Coke & Mentos Experiments". Why? Because Voltz and Grobe did everything right. Now, in "The Viral Video Manifesto", they explain how you can make a video guaranteed to pack a major punch by applying four core principles: Be True...Don't fake it. Make it real; Don't Waste My Time...Get down to business right away; Be Unforgettable...Show us something we've never seen before; and It's All About Humanity...An emotional connection is the key to sharing.

Traces the development of Disney animation, explains what made Disney's style unique, and features original sketches and drawings revealing the origins of Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters.

"The Illusion of Life 2" continues the first volume's pioneering work in the theory of animation. Covering a range of key topics, including post-WWII animation in Japan and the United States, computer animation, games, flight simulation and war, as well as issues of a general theoretical nature, the sixteen essays and introduction provide an abundance of new understandings, approaches, correctives, and challenges to scholars of animation as well as film.
